The natural park area, which is shaped by the glacier, extends over all the altitudinal belts in the Alps and includes unique and varied natural and cultural landscapes. Kaunergrat Natural Park is a homeland for people, a cultivated cultural area which ideal and close to nature and also an area, where special natural history features are protected.

In May 1998 the Kaunergrat Nature Park Society (Pitztal – Kaunertal) was founded, which championed the formation and, as an additional consequence, the support of a nature park and all the activities in the Tirol Oberland which goes with that. The Kaunergrat Nature Park region is characterised by the high mountain landscape of the Ötztal Alps. The Kaunergrat itself, which gave the nature park its name, extends between the two deep cut-in valleys - Pitztal and Kaunertal.

In the region there are numerous particularly valuable areas from a natural history point of view, such as the dry grassland, the fens at Piller Sattel, the Arzler Pitzeklamm and the wide glacier at the end of the valley. However, the area also contains an abundance of special features which are particular to the cultural landscape, such as the cultivated areas in the valley locations which are close to nature.
The region’s special position in history is attested in numerous cultural and historically significant constructions, buildings and fossils. An outstanding occurrence here was the fossil of the Bronze Age hoard in the summer of 2001.

Naturparkhaus

Eight years after Kaunergrat Nature Park was set up, in September 2006 building on the Naturparkhaus began. The Naturparkhaus is a symbolic for the nine member communities, since it is of course at the interface of Kaunertal, Pitztal and the Inntal. The strengths of the nature park region are illustrated in this hotel. Here Kaunergrat Nature Park can be appreciated and is accessible to guests as well as locals.

The "Gache Blick" has fascinated and drawn people in for millennia. The Naturparkhaus Kaunergrat on Piller Sattel is an information centre and a service facility for all visitors who are interested in nature and culture.
